The Iniskim Centre and ASTEP (Aboriginal Science and Technology Education Program)  are proud to present this year’s first installment of the Indigenous Science Speakers Series: Learning from Fire in Mi’kma’ki – Indigenous Ways of Knowing and Forest Fires.

The event will take place on Thursday, October 5, 2017 from 2-4pm in the Ideas Visualization Lounge (EL1270).

Shalan Joudry, a mother, ecologist, oral storyteller and poet from Kespukwitk (southwest Nova Scotia), will be speaking. Shalan’s Masters of Environmental Studies (Dalhousie) looked at the role of fire on the land and in our lives, researching through conversations with Elders, language, personal experience, and other stories. She lives with her family in their community of L’sitkuk (Bear River First Nation) where she works as a Species at Risk ecologist, blending Mi’kmaw perspectives and mainstream science.

Space is limited, so be sure to register in advance at: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/learning-from-fire-in-mikmaki-tickets-38302162800
