Social Virtual Reality Platforms as a tool for Teaching & Learning
Over the past year, Tony Chaston, associate professor has been developing a new course for the Department of Psychology at MRU. The Digital Frontier: Perception, Virtual Reality, and AI in Psychology will be taught entirely in Virtual Reality using the AltspaceVR Platform. During this presentation, Chaston will discuss the opportunities and challenges associated with developing and teaching in VR. Specifically, how to develop and build the learning spaces, how to manage a VR learning environment, and what it is actually like to teach in Virtual Reality. He will also discuss leveraging the opportunities of a VR learning space for non-VR teaching.
The ETC is a group of like-minded people who are passionate about sharing information and fostering collaboration in the space of emerging technologies. These technologies include virtual and augmented reality, 3D printing, artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics, wearables, and more.
Hosted by the Library, the group helps to facilitate exploration and understanding the adoption of new technologies at Mount Royal University (MRU). Participants come from multi-disciplinary backgrounds ranging from the arts to science and include students, researchers, administrators and members from MRU affiliate organizations.
The group meets monthly on Wednesdays, 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm where speakers will highlight emerging technology in teaching, research, and co-curricular activities being done at MRU. We will also invite external community members teaching, researching and working in emerging technologies including industry partners to showcase new technologies and their usage.
