From the manosphere (Ging, 2015) to the Toronto Van Attack, so-called ‘incels’—involuntary celibates—increasingly make Canadian headlines. Who are they? What do they believe? How and where do they communicate? And how do today’s social media platforms facilitate the downward spiral of young men into ‘incel’ ideologies, or eventually escalate online violence into offline attacks?

For that matter, are all ‘incels’ violent? And, importantly, what can we do to help?

Nicolette Little has been advising on ‘incels’ and related violence since 2016, for media, law enforcement, government, and gendered-violence prevention organizations. She has taught New Media and Feminist Media Studies at the University of Calgary. We look forward to discussing ‘incels’ and the manosphere in this talk, with Q&A and conversation to follow.

This presentation will be offered virtually.
