Beyond Borders for Cultural Competency: Exploring Japan

Event box

Beyond Borders is a dynamic, curiosity driven cultural competency course designed to take participants on a journey across vibrant cultures from around the world. Each month, we’ll discover a new cultural landscape—exploring its traditions, values, stories, rituals, and ways of communicating that shape how people live, connect, and belong.

This session explores contemporary Japanese society through its cultural landscape, focusing on key aspects such as language, values, and everyday practices. It considers Japanese communication styles and cultural concepts such as wa (harmony) and uchi/soto (inside/outside), and how these ideas may shape social relationships and behavior in daily life. The session will also touch on aspects of everyday culture, including food, as well as selected examples of how tradition and modern life coexist in Japan. Through these themes, participants will gain insight into the diversity and ongoing transformation of Japanese culture from both historical and contemporary perspectives.
