Beyond Borders is a dynamic, curiosity driven cultural competency course designed to take participants on a journey across vibrant cultures from around the world. Each month, we’ll discover a new cultural landscape—exploring its traditions, values, stories, rituals, and ways of communicating that shape how people live, connect, and belong.
Beyond its mountains, Lord Buddha, and the brave Gurkhas, Nepal is a country of extraordinary cultural richness and diversity, with 124 mother tongues and 142 caste/ethnic categories recorded in its 2021 Census. Presented by Sharmila Ranabhat, this session will explore how family, community, intergenerational relationships, traditions, festivals, food, hospitality, and everyday communication shape identity, connection, and belonging. The session will also examine Nepal’s growing vulnerability to climate crisis, the devastating impacts of recent flash floods and landslides, and the community-led efforts supporting relief, recovery, and resilience.
