COVID-19 has thrown out a definitive challenge to which, despite our consumptive denial, we all must respond: the world of things, of commodities, of capital-driven technology, is no longer valid and sustainable. In this talk Rita McKeough and Kurtis Lesick open up a discussion on rethinking our engagement with the “stuff” of technology, to emphasise instead practices, events, and experiences—all core qualities of the artistic endeavor. McKeough and Lesick break out the implications of such a philosophy to the teaching of Media Arts at Alberta University of the Arts.

The MRU Emerging Technologies Consortium (ETC) is a group of like-minded people who are passionate about sharing information and fostering collaboration in the space of emerging technologies. These technologies include virtual and augmented reality, 3D printing, artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics, wearables, and more.

Hosted by the Library, the group helps to facilitate exploration and understanding the adoption of new technologies at Mount Royal University (MRU). The group meets monthly on Wednesdays, 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm where speakers will highlight emerging technology in teaching, research, and co-curricular activities being done at MRU. We will also invite external community members teaching, researching and working in emerging technologies including industry partners to showcase new technologies and their usage.
